Turkey Serving Size

Here’s a general guideline for turkey serving sizes based on the weight of the bird:

  • 4 kg Turkey: Serves approximately 6 to 8 people.
  • 5 kg Turkey: Serves approximately 8 to 10 people.
  • 6 kg Turkey: Serves approximately 10 to 12 people.
  • 7 kg Turkey: Serves approximately 12 to 14 people.
  • 8 kg Turkey: Serves approximately 14 to 16 people.
  • 9 kg Turkey: Serves approximately 16 to 18 people.
  • 10 kg Turkey: Serves approximately 18 to 20 people.

These estimates assume that you will have other side dishes as well. It's always a good idea to consider the appetite of your guests and whether you want leftovers!

How To Cook

1. Preheat Oven: Set your oven to 180°C (360°F/Gas Mark 4)
2. Prepare the Roasting Dish: Place your turkey snugly in a large roasting dish. If the legs overhang, wrap them in tin foil and create a trench to channel any liquid back into the pan.
3. Calculate Cooking Time: Cook the turkey for 20-25 minutes per kilo. If stuffing the bird, add the weight of the stuffing to the turkey's weight for total cooking time. For stuffed turkeys, add an extra 30 minutes to the cooking time and ensure the stuffing is loose.
4. Check for Doneness: Gently twist the drumstick with a tea towel or oven glove; it should 'give' easily. Alternatively, insert a skewer into the thickest part of the thigh; the juices should run slightly pink.
5. Rest the Turkey: Allow the turkey to rest for 30-40 minutes at room temperature to retain juices. Collect any juices that escape for your gravy.
6. Make Gravy: Use the roasting tin to create gravy by adding a couple of pots of pure turkey stock and a splash of wine. Stir to release the flavourful remnants.

Cooking Note: Cooking times are general guidelines. Use a meat thermometer to ensure the turkey reaches an internal temperature of 75°C (165°F) for safe consumption. Adjust times based on the size of your turkey and your oven's performance.
